Dramaturgo estadounidense de origen irlandés. Comenzó a actuar en 1837, y después escribió la exitosa comedia London Assurance (1841) y Los hermanos corsos (1852). En 1853 se mudó a Nueva York, donde fue una pieza clave para lograr la promulgación de la primera ley de derecho de autor para el teatro en EE.UU. Su aclamada obra El pobre de Nueva York (1857) fue presentada en otros escenarios como, por ejemplo, El pobre de Londres. Manifestó inquietud por los temas sociales, y entregó una crítica velada a la esclavitud en El Octoroon (1859). Además escribió una serie de obras irlandesas populares, entre ellas The Colleen Bawn (1860) y The Shaughraun (1874).
